Cada año la editorial Houghton Mifflin Harcourt publica un antología llamada Best American Comics de la cual se encargan Jessica Abel y Matt Madden, cada edición cuenta con un editor invitado, en años anteriores hemos visto a Neil Gaiman, Alison Bechdel, Charles Burns y varios más como editores invitados, este año la encargada de decidir que cómics se incluirían en la edición del 2012 fue Françoise Mouly.
Françoise Mouly actualmente es la editora de arte de la revista The New Yorker y ha sido la encargada de que artistas como Adrian Tomine, Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes, Seth, Ivan Brunetti y muchos más colaboren en esta revista, además de que en los ochentas lanzó la revista RAW junto con Art Spiegelman, fue en esta revista donde originalmente se publicó Maus del mismo Spiegelman.
Jessica Abel y Matt Madden son dos artistas que están casados y que actualmente se dedican a dar clases en la Schoolof Visual Arts en Manhattan y han publicado dos libros acerca de cómo hacer cómics, Drawing Words and Writing Pictures y Mastering Comics: Drawing Words & Writing Pictures Continued. Ambos tienen trabajos publicados independientemente, quizás el más famoso sea el de Jessica Abel,La Perdida, publicado actualmente por Pantheon.
La serie de Best American Comics publica principalmente lo que se conoce como cómic independiente o de autor, ya que resulta difícil que compañías como Marvel o DC Comics les permitan reproducir alguno de sus cómics, pero al final del libro siempre agregan una lista de cómics que son parte de lo mejor del año pero que por alguna razón no se pudieron incluir y ahí es donde se mencionan a los cómics de estas compañías.
A mi me gustan estos libros porque incluyen una gran cantidad de material de muchos artistas que a veces es difícil conseguir sus trabajos, por lo que si pueden chequenlo cuando salga ahora en septiembre.
